September, more than halfway through 2024, marks a significant moment for me. It's the month I'll be moderating a panel at the Furious Flower Poetry Conference, which occurs only once every decade. Surprisingly, I'm not as anxious as I anticipated. Joined by three other Sister Scribes, we'll share our words and art with the audience.
As I discussed with Lori Tharps, the founder of The Sanctuary, our bond as Sister Scribes is truly special. We've come together, believing in ourselves and supporting one another's creative endeavors. While I may have been the catalyst for the Furious Flower Sister Scribes coming together, it's their unwavering commitment, consistency, and presence that has truly strengthened our sisterhood and led to this moment of achievement.
Our sisterhood isn't about the spotlight, for we all know there's room for all of us under its glow. It's about showing up consistently, creating a safe space for each of us and others, offering support when needed, and welcoming each other back with open arms when one of us needs time away.
September fills me with gratitude for the support systems in my life, built upon reciprocity, connection, understanding, and steadfastness.
As I was listening to my Liked Songs Spotify playlist (It’s so long, I have forgotten the older songs I have liked on there), while putting henna protein treatment in my hair, I rediscovered Aaron May’s song Make It. The song was so fitting.
I hope you make it
I hope you make it real far
I wish you greatness and stars
I hope you know who you are
These lines are exactly what I feel for anyone who crosses paths with my work on Substack and beyond, who interacts with me at the conference, and who simply needs to be told, that genuine people are rooting for you.
We all face challenges and setbacks, but leaning into those who show up consistently and offer unwavering support helps us overcome whatever is blocking our path.
We've learned this year the importance of self-care, resilience, and the power of community.
May we all continue to support and uplift each other, striving for our versions of joy and never forgetting who we truly are.
